Federal University Gusau Unveils-Federal University Gusau (FUGUS) has formally entered a new chapter in its institutional journey with the appointment of a fresh Vice-Chancellor and two senior principal officers. The leadership changes were ratified by the University’s Governing Council during its 32nd statutory meeting, which took place in Abuja between 9 and 12 December 2025.

The decision marks a significant transition moment for the university, drawing attention from students, academic staff, non-teaching employees, alumni, and stakeholders across Nigeria’s higher education sector. Leadership appointments of this magnitude often shape policy direction, academic culture, infrastructure priorities, and institutional reputation, making the announcement particularly noteworthy.

Governing Council Approves Key Leadership Appointments

At the conclusion of its deliberations, the Governing Council approved three strategic appointments following recommendations submitted by the Joint Senate and Council Selection Committee. The approved positions include the Vice-Chancellor, the University Librarian, and the Director of Physical Planning, Works, and Maintenance.

Professor Tukur Adamu was selected as the fourth substantive Vice-Chancellor of Federal University Gusau. Alongside him, Dr Shaibu Adona Sadiku was named University Librarian, while Quantity Surveyor Agwari Musa Jafaru was appointed Director of Physical Planning, Works, and Maintenance.

Each appointment reflects the Council’s emphasis on experience, professional depth, and institutional leadership capacity as FUGUS prepares for its next phase of growth.

Profile of the New Vice-Chancellor

Professor Tukur Adamu brings decades of academic, administrative, and leadership experience into his new role as Vice-Chancellor. Before this appointment, he served as Deputy Vice-Chancellor in charge of Research, Innovation, and Development at Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, where he played a central role in advancing scholarly output and institutional research frameworks.

Born on 2 February 1962 in Gurbi, located within the Talata Mafara Local Government Area of Zamfara State, Professor Adamu’s academic journey began at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in 1986, followed by a Master of Science degree in Zoology in 1993. His pursuit of advanced scholarship culminated in a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Zoology, which he obtained from Usmanu Danfodiyo University in 1998.

His professional career commenced in 1987 as a Fisheries Officer with the Sokoto State Government. Two years later, he transitioned into academia, joining Usmanu Danfodiyo University as a Graduate Assistant. Through sustained research contributions, teaching excellence, and administrative service, he rose through the ranks to attain the position of Professor of Parasitology in 2005.

Academic and Administrative Track Record

Over the years, Professor Adamu has held numerous leadership positions that underscore his administrative competence. His portfolio includes roles such as Examinations Officer, Unit Head, Head of Department, and Director of the School of Matriculation Studies. Each role strengthened his exposure to academic governance, student management, and institutional policy execution.

Beyond university administration, he also served as Rector of Abdu Gusau Polytechnic in Zamfara State, where he oversaw academic reforms, infrastructural expansion, and operational restructuring. His combined experience across university and polytechnic systems positions him as a versatile leader with a broad understanding of Nigeria’s tertiary education landscape.

Professor Adamu officially succeeds Professor M. G. Abubakar, whose tenure as Vice-Chancellor concludes on 10 February 2026. Professor Abubakar’s administration is widely acknowledged for improvements in academic programming, staff development initiatives, and enhanced campus security.

Appointment of the New University Librarian

Dr Shaibu Adona Sadiku has been appointed as the University Librarian, bringing extensive expertise in library science, information management, and academic resource administration to the position.

Born on 19 November 1969 in Oganiman, Adavi Local Government Area of Kogi State, Dr Sadiku obtained his Bachelor’s degree in Library and Information Science from Bayero University, Kano, in 1995. He later earned a Master’s degree in Library Science from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, in 2011, before completing his PhD at the University of Ilorin in 2017.

Dr Sadiku joined Usmanu Danfodiyo University in 2008, where he steadily advanced to the rank of Principal Librarian. His leadership experience spans several units, including Processing Services, Technical Services, and Readers’ Services. He also supervised multiple branch libraries and was appointed Head of the Department of Library and Information Science in 2022.

His professional affiliations include membership of the Nigerian Library Association and registration with the Librarians’ Registration Council of Nigeria, reflecting his standing within the profession.

Director of Physical Planning, Works, and Maintenance

The Governing Council also confirmed the appointment of Quantity Surveyor Agwari Musa Jafaru as Director of Physical Planning, Works, and Maintenance. His role places him at the centre of infrastructure development, campus planning, and facility management across the university.

Born on 15 September 1985 in Suleja, Niger State, Qs Jafaru is an indigene of the Federal Capital Territory. He earned a Bachelor of Technology degree in Quantity Surveying from the Federal University of Technology, Minna, in 2020 and is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Procurement Management at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi.

He began his professional career at Sokoto State University in 2014, initially serving as a Senior Quantity Surveyor before advancing to Chief Quantity Surveyor in 2023. In 2025, he assumed the role of Director of Physical Planning and Maintenance, demonstrating strong leadership in project oversight and infrastructure coordination.

Qs Jafaru holds membership in both the Nigerian Institute of Quantity Surveyors and the Quantity Surveyors Registration Board of Nigeria.

Strategic Significance of the New Leadership Team

The combined appointments reflect Federal University Gusau’s strategic intent to strengthen governance, improve academic service delivery, and enhance physical infrastructure.
